Jack Chirac was the first leader to have acknowledged France's role in the Jewish genocide during World War II and opposed the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Paris: Jacques Chirac, President of France for 12 years, died on Thursday last at the age of 86.

He was the first leader to have acknowledged France's role in the Jewish genocide during World War II and opposed the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.

Chirac's son-in-law Frederick Salat-Baroux said that Chirac breathed his last among his family.

He has not given the reason for Shirak's death, but since leaving the post of President in 2007, he was surrounded by many diseases.

He was one of the leaders of Europe who lived a long political life. He was head of the nation of France twice from 1995 to 2007. He became the Prime Minister of France twice and was also the Mayor of Paris for nearly two decades (18 years).

According to The Guardian report, although his term as president is known for inaction and political stagnation. At the same time, by the time he left France, he was struggling with debt, inequality and unemployment as much as he was in power, but his attractive personality at the time of his leaving the office rendered him one of the favorite leaders of France.

During his 12-year tenure as president, Chirac was a global diplomat but failed to carry out economic reforms and ease tensions between police and minority youth, leading to riots in France in 2005.

He also broke the myth that France was not aware of the massacre and extermination of the Jews.

He admitted that during World War II, approximately 76,000 Jews were sent to Nazi death camps. He fully accepted the role of France in it.

Chirac opposed the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Because of this, there was tension in the relationship with his top aide of France. This weakened the Atlantic alliance.

However, despite the US invading Iraq, Shirak received international support from war critics.

In addition, Chirac worked as a diplomat to improve relations with other countries and forged better relations with West Asia and African countries. He was the President of the US President George W. after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. He was the first head of state to meet Bush.

However, during his tenure as Mayor of Paris, he was accused of misappropriation of money and taking bribe.

He was officially charged in 2007 after stepping down from the presidency. He was convicted in 2011 of misuse of public money, treachery, conflict of interest and given a two-year prison sentence.

He had a stroke in 2005 due to which he remained in the hospital for a week. After this, a pacemaker was put in his heart in 2008.
